This is who Constance Keeney Jameson believes the men are:

James O. Utterson & Joseph B. Alkire
The men appear to be wood cutting. They are are all related by marriage
(many of which married Stumbo sisters) or descent. They are on the
William C. Stumbo property, which is now near the railroad which was
later purchased by the city of Carlisle, IA for what is currently the City Park.
